"WILLIAM CUTHILL MASON received his technical education at the Paisley Technical College, and served his apprenticeship with Messrs. Thomas Shanks and Company, Ltd., of Johnstone, from 1903 to 1909, with whom he remained for a further two years. After holding short engagements as chief draughtsman to Messrs. Davis and Horne, Ltd., of Johnstone, and as engineering draughtsman to Messrs. Mirrlees, Watson and Company, Ltd., Glasgow, he became outside supervising engineer to Messrs. Blair, Campbell and McLean, Ltd., food and chemical engineers in the same city.
In 1916 he was appointed assistant superintendent and chief engineer in H.M. Factory at Colnbrook and later he was engineer in charge of a staff of engineers and draughtsmen engaged at the Institution on the design of plant for the Ministry of Munitions. He returned in 1919 to Messrs. Blair, Campbell and McLean as works manager, with responsibility for design and production and with the charge of the shop foundry. Three years later he became London manager for the firm, with whom he remained until 1927.
For the next three years he was chief engineer and manager of the Non-Inflammable Film Company, Ltd., London and Lancaster, after which he took up an appointment as manager with Messrs. Bennett, Sons and Shears, Ltd., London, chemical and food engineers, and also joined the board of directors. This position he retained until his death, which occurred on 25th January 1950, in his sixty-second year. Mr. Mason had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1926."
