WILLIAM ECKERSLEY, born on the 23rd January, 1824, at Manchester, died on the 13th November, 1912.
Having served a pupilage under the late Sir John Macneill on Irish railways, he was appointed Resident Engineer under the late Sir John Hawkshaw on the construction of part of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway system in the West Riding.
He then became a contractor for public works, and, either singly or in conjunction with others, carried out a number of important railway contracts for the London and North Western, Midland, Great Western, Furness and other companies in this country, besides the East Hungarian line, Nice pier, and the Piraeus Railway in Greece.
Mr. Eckersley was elected on the 5th April, 1854, a Member of The Institution, to which he had thus, at the time of his death, been attached for upwards of 58 years.
