William Edward Gustave Bender (1885-1961)
1922 M.B.E., Assoc.M.Inst.C.E., A.C.G.I., Civil Engineer (Railways), Bengal and North Western Railway, Gorakhpur, United Provinces, India; b. 1885. Ed. Dulwich College. Training: Central Technical College, South Kensington. 1903-5— With Rendel and Robertson. 1905 to date— With the Bengal and North Western Railway in India. Chief Works: Various extensions of the above-named railway; construction of sixty miles of standard gauge military railway, Bagdad to Baiji (near Fathah ) in Mesopotamia. Member of Gorakhpur Club and Benares Club. War Services.—Joined March, 1916, attached 1st K.G.O. Sappers and Miners; January 1, 1917, appointed Assistant Inspecting Officer, Imperial Service Sappers; July 19, 1917, proceeded to Mesopotamia as Special Service Officer with Sirmur Sappers; March, 1918, transferred to military railways; constructed extension of German railway from. Bagdad to Baiji for Mosul operations. Was mentioned in dispatches and created M.B.E.
