"WILLIAM HENRY GOWING, who was born in London in 1868, received his education at technical schools, in Gloucester, Manchester, and Birmingham. After serving his apprenticeship with Messrs. Fielding and Platt, Ltd., Gloucester, engineers, from 1885 to 1892, he gained experience in one of H.M. Dockyards and was on service in the Royal Navy until 1898. He then became assistant works superintendent to the General Electrical Company, Ltd., Witton, and after holding this position for six years held short appointments as works manager to the Morris Hawkins Electrical Company, Ltd., Dagenham, and as works manager and director of Messrs. Kramos, Ltd., Bath. In 1908 he joined Messrs. Henry Pooley and Son, Ltd., Albion Works, Staffs, as their works manager and remained with that firm in the same capacity until 1932, when the business was transferred to the Soho Works of Messrs. Avery and Company, Ltd., Birmingham, makers of weighing machines. He was in the service of the latter firm for some four years before going to live in retirement at Cheltenham, where his death occurred on 2nd August 1950. Mr. Gowing had been a Member of the Institution since 1915."
