William Hodson (Bolton)
1836 William Hodson of Little Bridge Street was summoned for offences against the Factories Act, and was fined £8 plus costs. He was one of many mill owners charged in that era with similar offences, typically involving employing children for more than 9 hours, employing children without school certificates, not whitewashing the walls, and unsatisfactory record-keeping.[1]
1839 'WM. HODSON PRESENTS his grateful acknowledgements to all those who so successfully exerted themselves extinguishing the fire which took place in his Mill, on Tuesday evening. Also to Messrs. Ormrod and Hardcaslle, for so speedily sending their Fire Engine to assist on the occasion. Little Bridge, Bolton, Feb. 7th, 1839.[2]
1840 'NOTICE. THE Creditors of Mr. WILLIAM HODSON, late of Bolton-le-Moors, Cotton-spinner, and Spindlemaker, are requested to meet at the Office of Messrs. MULLINER and TYRER, Accountants, Acres Field. Bolton, on Wednesday, the 20th day of November next, at Ten o’clock in the Forenoon, to consider the best means of disposing of the Estate and Effects of the said Mr. William Hodson, and for other purposes relating to his affairs. MATTHEW DAWES. 30th October, 1840.'[3]

THE whole of the STOCK-in-TRADE of a Spindle Maker, &c. consisting of Turning Lathes, Benches, Vices, Grinding Stones, Taps, &c. Dies. Turning Tools, Shafts, Straps. New and Old Spindles, a quantity of Iron, and other Effects. The Sale to begin at Ten o’clock in the Forenoon. For further particulars and to view the property apply to Messrs.
