Around 1858 William Jones became fascinated in the new sewing machines that were coming across from America. At the time William and his brother (John?) had a small engineering plant that made steam engines to power factory equipment such as pumps, lathes, jigs and other machinery of the period.

Jones went into partnership with Thomas Chadwick in Ashton under Lyne
1863 Dissolution of Chadwick and Jones
Jones and Co built a new factory in Audenshaw

By 1889 the company was making over 20,000 sewing machines per year
1889 Public company - the Jones Sewing Machine Co was registered on 5 July, to take over the business established by William Jones, sewing machine manufacturers[1], Jones and Co
1948 William Jones Ltd was listed as sewing machine makers
1961 William Jones: Manufacturers of domestic and industrial sewing machines. Makers of special type of sewing machine for making conveyor belts for use in mining industry. 800 employees. [2]
