WILLIAM LEWIS HARLISS was born at Boston, Lincs, on 13th March 1884, and was educated at the Leys School, Cambridge, and the Crystal Palace School of Engineering.
He served an apprenticeship of three years with the British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., Rugby, and from there obtained, in December 1907, a post of assistant engineer with the Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co., Ltd., Aberdare, subsequently being appointed one of their chief engineers. He had the sole charge of several collieries, and was entirely responsible for the unwatering and refitting of some pits taken over from the Marquess of Bute, being highly complimented by the directors for his work.
His death took place from pneumonia, following influenza, on 28th November 1918, at the age of thirty-four.
He was elected a Graduate of this Institution in 1903, and an Associate Member in 1910.
