WILLIAM MUNRO was born in Guernsey on 18th January 1858, and his school education was gained at the Royal Military School, Inverness, and at a private school at Sittingbourne.
Later on he took special courses at the Liverpool College of Science and elsewhere.
He was apprenticed in the works of Messrs. Edward Lloyd, London and Sittingbourne.
On completion of his term, about 1880, he entered the works of Messrs. Laird Brothers, Birkenhead, as improver, and spent the next few years as draughtsman and as engineer in connexion with marine work of various kinds for the Admiralty and others in London, Portsmouth, and other places.
He was interested in the production of the first Brennan torpedo, taking charge of the factory up to 1896.
He then acted as Inspecting Engineer for the War Office in connection with the torpedo at Woolwich, Chatham, and Sheffield until 1906, and was responsible during that period for construction of torpedoes, launching gear, slipways, etc.
The years 1907-1910 he spent with the Western Electrical Co., as departmental engineer in charge of constructional ironwork and responsible for many installations.
In 1910 after practising as Consulting Engineer he became chief engineer and works manager to the Bristol Distilling Co., Ltd., Bristol. During the years which have elapsed since that date Mr. Munro carried out the reorganization of the old works and the erection of the new and larger distillery now existing for the Distillers' Co., into which Company the old business has been merged.
His death took place in Bristol on 7th January 1925.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1916.
