William Rebotier Aveline (1867-1926)

WILLIAM REBOTIER AVELINE, O.B.E., was born in Cumberland in 1867 and was educated at the Merchant Venturers' School, Bristol.
He was a pupil in the engineering shops of Messrs. G. K. Stothert and Co. of Bristol, and a draughtsman for three years with Messrs. Samuelson and Co. of Banbury.
In 1892 he went to India to take up a post at Bombay.
Two years later he entered the service of Messrs. M. Samuel and Co., the former managers of the Shell Transport and Trading Company and was engaged in the design and erection of their bulk oil installations in India, Egypt and South and East Africa. He was ultimately appointed Chief Engineer of the Asiatic Petroleum Co., Ltd., and held that position until his sudden death in London on 25th October 1926.
When, in 1915, at a critical period of the War, the Company placed their technical organization at the disposal of the Government, his assistance proved of great value in the production of high explosives and in the supply of petrol to the Army and Air Force in France. In recognition of these services, the O.B.E. was conferred upon him in 1919.
Mr. Aveline became an Associate Member of this Institution in 1894 and a Member in 1898.
