1866 Married at Exeter to Ellen Maria Hosgood

1871 Living at 18 Waterloo Place, Exeter: William Shepherd (age 30 born Fulham), Engine Fitter. With his wife Ellen M. Shepherd (age 33 born London) and their two daughters Elizabeth Shepherd (age 3 born Birmingham) and Mary E. Shepherd (age 2 born Exeter, St. David's). Also a boarder George Hosegood (age 26 born Thorverton, Devon), Blacksmith.[1]

1880 Birth of son Robert John Shepherd

1881 Living at 12 Longbrook Terrace, Exeter: William Shepherd (age 40 born London), Engine Fitter at Works. With his wife and six children. In the next house 13 Longbrook Terrace, Exeter is William Shepherd (age 68 born Cullompton), General Smith employing 5 men and 4 boys. With his wife Harriett Shepherd, his niece and his granddaughter (age 69 born Bow).[2]

1899 September. With his son he designed and built the first motor car in Exeter beating Frederick Treeby Reid.[3]

1891 Living at 60 Howell Road, Exeter. Steam Engine Maker - employer. With his wife and five children.[4]

1901 Living at 11 Longbrook Terrace, Exeter: William Shepherd (age 60 born London), Mechanical Engineer - own a/c. With his wife Marie Shepherd (age 63 born London) and their five children; Mary Shepherd (age 31 born Exeter); Harriet Shepherd (age 29 born Exeter); William Shepherd (age 23 born Exeter), Engineer and Fitter (Iron and Steel); Robert Shepherd (age 20 born Exeter), Engineer and Fitter (Iron and Steel); and Florence Shepherd (age 17 born Exeter).[5]

1911 Living at 11 Longbrook Terrace, Exeter: William Shepherd (age 70 born London), Mechanical Engineer - Employer. With his wife Marie Shepherd (age 73 born London) and their four children; Harriett Shepherd (age 39 born Exeter); William Shepherd (age 33 born Exeter), Mechanical Engineer; Myra Shepherd (age 35 born Exeter); Florence Richards (age 27 born Exeter); and his grandson Francis Richards (age 9 moths born Claygate, Surrey).[6]

1912 November 7th. Died. 'On November 7th, at 11 Longbrook Terrace, William Shepherd, aged 72.'[7]

Probate to his widow Ellen Maria Shepherd and to Robert Shepherd, Grocer.

1919 July 15th. Death of his wife. 'On July 15th, Ellen Maria, widow of the late William Shepherd, of No. 11, Longbrook-terrace, Exeter, aged 81 years.'[8]
