William Smith (1815-1875) of W. Smith and Co (Witney)
1815 November 01st. Baptised the son of William Lineham Smith, a Labourer, and his wife Mary Ann.
Developed businesses in mop-making and in weaving. He also grew a successful brewing business that he sold to buy a spinning business from John George.
1835 Married Ann Susan Godfrey and had eleven children
1851 Living at Bridge Street, Witney: William Smith (age 36 born Rumsden, Oxon.), Maltster and Brewer. With his wife Ann Smith (age 34 born Witney) and son William Smith (age 3 born Witney) and fiver daughters.[1]
1861 Living at Bridge Street, Witney: William Smith (age 45 born Witney), Woollen Manufacturer employing 7 men, 10 women, 4 boys and 6 girls. With his wife Ann and their six daughters and one son.[2]
1871 Living at 36 Bridge Street, Witney: William Smith (age 55 born Witney), Master Woollen Manufacturer employing 10 men, 13 women, 7 boys and 4 girls. With his wife Ann and their two daughters and three sons.[3]
1875 July 14th. Died. Mr. William Smith, mop and yarn manufacturer, Bridge-street, Witney.[4]
Note: 1916 Will of William Smith, blanket manufacturer of Witney.[5] Possibly a son.
