WILLIAM VALLANCE MAUCHLIN was born in Glasgow in 1868, but went to New Zealand in his early years.
He served a six years' apprenticeship with Messrs. P. and D. Duncan of Christchurch, and subsequently gained considerable experience of general design, repair, and erection work with various traction, electrical, and boot machinery firms.
From 1896 to 1903 he was with the New Zealand Government Railways on locomotive repair and construction work, and for fifteen years he was examiner and inspector for Christchurch Technical College.
In 1923 he joined Messrs. J. J. Niven and Company as a draughtsman and estimator, and he became the firm's district engineer for the South Island.
In 1927 he commenced to practise as a consulting engineer, but he died on 4th April 1928.
Mr. Mauchlin became an Associate Member of the Institution in 1925.
