1902/02/22 Motor Cycling Club Race Meeting
Held at Crystal Palace
1902 February 22nd - Saturday.[1]
At the Crystal Palace on Saturday was held, the Motor Cycling Club's First Race Meeting. Two Coventry motor bicycles were successful.
Three events, each at five miles, figured upon programme, the first for motor bicycles catalogued by the manufacturers at 1.5 h.p. and under, the second for those so set at more than 1.5 h.p. and not exceeding 2 h.p., and the third for cycles driven by engines over 2 h.p.
For the first event there were fifteen but these only five faced the starters. Of the eight entered for the second event, three stood down, and but two started for the third event.
The 1.5 h.p. Werner (old type), driven by T. H. Tessier, covered the trial five miles in 9m. 18s. and the final in 9m. 29 2-5s.
In the second event, the Rex did similarly, H. W. Stones driving the machine with great skill, although, curiously enough, the time was 9m 40s.
In the third event, the 2.75 h. p. Excelsior (Bayliss, Thomas and Co., Coventry), with H. Martin up, won in 9m. 4s., And Westlake doing 9m. 28 l-5s. on a direct driving Chapelle.
The course for the speed and hill-climbing test was from a point on the read alongside the cricket field in rear of the track to a point about 150 yards short of the centre of the terrace, via the road skirting the eastward boundary of the Crystal Palace grounds.
