1913/04/12 Brooklands Record Attempts

Report.[1]

'It was only on February 15 of this a sensation was caused by a motor car travelling, over a hundred miles in one hour, the vehicle to gain that much sought record being the 25 horse power Talbot owned by Lord Shrewsbury and driven by Mr. Percy Lambert. The actual distance covered was 103 miles 1470 yards. Yet that feat is already eclipsed, for at Brooklands on Saturday Jules Goux, the well-known continental road racer, driving Mr. H. Boissy's 30 horse power Peugeot, crowded 106 miles, 397 yards into the 6o minutes' running.

The performance was accomplished in the course attempt on the six hours' record, which however, was brought to a stop within an hour and a half owing to the burning out of the carburettor. The arrangement was for Goux and his compatriot, Georges Boillot, to drive alternately in one hour spells, and the latter was therefore at the wheel at the finish. Four world's records were beaten during the ride, the figures being as follows:

  • Fifty Miles— New record, 28:18:65 a speed of 105.97 miles per hour. Previous best, 29:02:05. by Percy Lambert on Lord Shrewsbury's 25 horse power Talbot.
  • One Hundred Miles— New record, 56:29:93, a speed of 106.4 miles per hour. Previous best, the Talbot's 57min. 49.355ee.
  • One Hour.— New record, 106 miles 357 yards. Previous best, the Talbot's 103 miles 1470 yards.
  • Hundred and Fifty Miles. — New record. 01:28:35:67, a speed of 101.59 miles per hour. Previous best, 01:31:52.06 by Victor Hemery on Mr. W. M. Letts's 60 Horse power Lorraine Dietrich. '
