Brooklands Whitsun Meeting.[1]
The splendid total entry of 182 was received for the Bank Holiday meeting Brooklands to-day, the best supported events being the motor cycle handicap, in which there were 42 entries for the 5.75 miles race and 35 for the 8.5 miles contest. E. Remington, with a two-cylinder N.U.T. machine, was scratch in both cases, while C. G. Pullin, the winner of the Senior Tourist Trophy Road Race in the Isle of Man, with his Rudge, had sixteen seconds start in the former event and twenty-four seconds in the latter.
The meeting was notable, as being the first at which the cars were painted distinctive colours to enable the spectators the better follow the progress of the respective competitors. This method superseded wearing of coloured costumes the drivers. In the "Lightning" Handicaps, for cars capable of 90 miles hour or more, N. F. Holder, with his Vauxhall, painted light blue with dark blue frame, was at scratch, Robertson-Shersby-Harvie with a pink Itala, J. A. Toop with Gordon Watney's dull aluminium Peugeot, Malcolm Campbell, with a blue Sunbeam equipped with yellow wheels, and J. W. Read, with aluminium all received short starts. The amateur element was strongly represented, the Private Competitors' Handicap having to be arranged in two heats. The racing opened beautiful weather before four or five thousand spectators.
