IVES, Harry William Maclean, C.I.E., M.Inst.C.E., Irrigation Engineer, Chief Engineer and Secretary to Government, Punjab, P.W.D., Irrigation Branch; b. 1867. Ed. in Bishop Cotton School, Simla, and passed through Thomason Civil Engineering College, Roorkee, India, securing one of the four Government appointments. Won also the Thomason Gold Medal for the best project of the year. Joined the Indian P.W.D. in April, 1889. On construction of new canals since 1893, being a pioneer on the Lower Chenab, Lower Jhelam and Upper Chenab Canals, and later on the Upper Jhelam Canal Maintenance. Was in sole charge of the construction of the Head Works at Marala, of the Upper Chenab Canal, on the Chenab River from October, 1905, to April, 1909. This canal was formally opened for irrigation by His Excellency Lord Hardinge, Viceroy of India, in April, 1912, and for his work at Marala he was awarded the Kaiser-i-Hind (Gold) Medal. Has been a Government servant since 1889, rising from Apprentice Engineer to Chief Engineer and Secretary to Government, Punjab, P.W.D., in thirty years' service. Was, awarded the C.T.E. in January, 1921. Clubs: East India United Service, St. James's Square, London; Punjab, Lahore; Himalaya, Mussoorie.
