Mr. A. Howell (Member), received his education at Goldsmiths' Institute and Bedford Modern School.
He served an apprenticeship with Crompton and Co., Ltd., Chelmsford, and then became an engineering assistant at Bayliss, Jones and Bayliss, Ltd., Wolverhampton, in connexion with rolling mill and works layout and construction.
He later became an engineering assistant to his present firm, Messrs. Merz and McLellan, Consulting Engineers, by whom he was appointed head of the mechanical engineering department. He was taken into partnership in 1937 and has advised on problems concerning the generation and supply of electricity in which connexion he has done an extensive amount of travelling abroad.
He is a member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers and, during, 1954 is Sheriff of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne. He is joint author of the paper 'The Design and Operation of Dunston "B" Generating Station with Particular Reference to 50-MW. Turbo-alternators Unitized with Reheater Boilers' which was read at the Institution at a joint meeting of the Institution and of the Institution of Electrical Engineers.
