Mr. Radcliffe took a B.Sc. (London) Special Physics degree from University College, Nottingham, in June 1939 and joined the Mine Design Department, H.M.S. Vernon in March 1940. After working for two and a half years on the problems of reducing the magnetic fields of ships he was transferred to the Trials Group of what later became the Admiralty Mining Establishment.

Since 1946 he has worked on physical aspects of combustion (e.g. atomization, pressure fluctuations) at the National Gas Turbine Establishment, Ministry of Supply.
