ALBERT FREDERICK ALLEN, whose death occurred on 27th August 1943, at the age of forty-two, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1937. He received his education in New York City and at the Polytechnic Preparatory School, Brooklyn, U.S.A., and obtained his technical training at West Hartlepool Technical College from 1919 to 1923, and during the latter period he served his apprenticeship with Messrs. Richardsons, Westgarth and Company, Ltd. He remained with that firm as draughtsman for a few months and was then employed from 1924 to 1929 by Messrs. Alfred Holt and Company, of Liverpool, as marine engineer on various vessels.
During this period he obtained his Board of Trade First-Class Engineer's Certificate. After holding a temporary position as engineer surveyor for Lloyd's Register of Shipping at New York, where he was responsible for repairs to vessels, he assisted Mr. S. J. Morgan, of Wingate, as engineer engaged on experimental design. He then entered the engine works drawing office of Messrs. Harland and Wolff, Belfast. Two years later he was appointed leading draughtsman at the Central Marine Engine Works, West Hartlepool.
Mr. Allen's final appointment, which dated from 1939, was that of assistant mechanical engineer to Sir Alexander Gibb and Partners, consulting engineers, of Westminster.
