c.1843 Born in Kirkmichael, Banffshire, son of James Dey, a miller, and his wife Elizabeth Grant.

1861 Lived at home in Inverness[1]

1867 Matriculated at Peterhouse College, Cambridge[2]

1871 Graduated, 10th Wrangler - i.e. in mathematics.

1871 A M Teacher Of Mathematics, visitor of the Milne family in Aberdeen[3]

1871-3 Fellow of Peterhouse

1873 Appointed H.M. Inspector of Schools in Scotland[4]

In the 1880s married Margaret Coupar, an American

1889 Gained LL.D from Cambridge University

1891 H M Inspector Of Schools, lived in Govan, Glasgow, with Margaret J Dey 26, Elizabeth A Dey 3, and his brother John Dey 50, a Dry Goods Merchant[5]

1898 John Dey, of Syracuse, and Alexander Dey, residing at Park Lodge, 62 Albert Drive, Pollokshields, Glasgow, were partners in the Dey Patents Co, of Syracuse, New York, and Glasgow; they took out a petition of Cessio against P. Dunsire, commission agent[6]

1898 of Glasgow, patent with John Dey of Syracuse, on apparatus for recording time of employees entering or leaving their employment; this was followed by several other patents on similar technology over the next few years.
