Alfred Hills (1844-1907)

Born 29 Jan 1844 in Durham, County Durham.[1]

c1846 Moved with family to Sheffield.[2]

1861 Census – Accountant (lodging in London)

Began his business career in Sheffield with Thomas Turton and Sons at their Sheaf Works, Sheffield.

1871 Census – Commercial Clerk (Steel), Sheffield.

1876 First Company Secretary of recently incorporated William Jessop and Sons Limited.[3] By implication from reports, he had not previously worked for Jessops.

1891 Appointed to the Board of William Jessop and Sons Limited, as Joint Managing Director.[4]

1901-1902 Deeply involved in Jessop’s establishment of a manufacturing works in USA.

1905 Due to poor health, resigned position as joint MD, but remained on the Board of William Jessop and Sons.[5]

1907 Died on 15 Aug 1907.

Alfred Hills was a Quaker.[6]

His son, Allen Hills(1882-1966), was an employee of William Jessop and Sons.
