BY the death of Major Arthur Bernard Samler Steinmetz, of Bedford, on Saturday last, at his home, following a short illness, we lose one of the country's foremost experts in tillage, who had almost a lifelong connection with J. and F. Howard, Ltd., of that town.

Major Steinmetz, who was born in 1874 at Bedford, was the son of the late Dr. H. Steinmetz, for many years the German Master at the Grammar School. After completing his education at the Grammar School young Steinmetz was apprenticed at the Britannia Works of J. and F. Howard, Ltd., and with the exception of a short period during which he was engaged in business on his own account he remained with the firm until his death. He made a very close study of the agricultural side of his firm's activities and was the chief of its experimental design department.

In the course of his varied work he made extensive visits to practically all the European countries and to America, Cuba and India, where he studied first hand the various local problems relating......
