ARTHUR DICKINSON retained a close connection with engineering in the Manchester district throughout his career. He received his education at the Royal Technical Institute, Salford, and served his apprenticeship from 1906 to 1909 at the Salford Corporation Electricity Works, where he remained as a junior assistant for a further four years.
After filling a temporary appointment as chief assistant to the plant engineer, Messrs. Hans Renold, Ltd., Manchester, for whom he was engaged on design and installation, he was for a brief period employed as engineer draughtsman to Messrs. Brotherton and Company, of Leeds. In 1915 he was appointed engineer inspector for the Manchester Steam Users Association and, after occupying this position for eleven years, returned to the service of the Salford Corporation Electricity Department as steam engineer and chemist, with responsibility for the economical operation of the boilers and turbo-alternator plant, in addition to the analysis of fuel, water, and oils.
In 1931 he became technical assistant to the superintendent of the generating station and held this position until his death, which occurred on 1st May 1945, in his fifty-sixth year. Mr. Dickinson was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1932.
