ARTHUR GEORGE WHITBY was interested throughout his career in sugar factories and ice-making plant, and had worked in many parts of the world in connexion with the erection of machinery for these purposes.
He was apprenticed from 1865 to 1870 at the Erith Iron Works of Messrs. Easton and Anderson, and was a draughtsman for some months.
In 1871 he was sent to Egypt by the firm to erect sugar factories, and remained there for three years.
From 1874 he was variously employed in England, Spain, and elsewhere, and in 1881 went to Brazil for Messrs. Liddell and Barkley, to superintend the erection of six sugar factories.
He was subsequently associated with Mr. W. Walker in the design and erection of sugar plant, the laying of tramways, and the erection of coffee establishments in Java, where he remained for over nine years.
Mr. Whitby was born in Guernsey in 1849, and died on 11th December 1928.
He became a Member of the Institution in 1894.
