ARTHUR JOHNSON, who was born in 1886, received his general education at King Edward's School, Birmingham, where he held a foundation scholarship, and obtained his technical education at the Birmingham and Manchester Municipal Colleges of Technology.
His apprenticeship was served with Messrs. Vickers, Sons and Maxim, Ltd., from 1902 to 1904, and with the General Electric Company, Ltd., from 1904 to 1907. He continued with the latter firm as a junior draughtsman, and after a brief period as assistant engineer to Messrs. Mather and Platt, Ltd., in Manchester, returned in 1910 to become senior draughts man.
Meanwhile he was engaged in teaching at the Birmingham Municipal Technical College and eventually he held the post of lecturer in electrical engineering at Handsworth Technical School. From 1917 to 1920 he was attached to the Admiralty as consulting engineer to the director of naval ordnance. In 1920 he was appointed chief electrical engineer to Messrs. Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd., at Billingham, but four years later he came to London to act in a similar capacity for Messrs. International Combustion, Ltd. This position he retained for six years and after holding various brief appointments, including that of chief engineer to Messrs. London Film Productions, Ltd., he became in 1937 personal assistant at the London office of Messrs. Richard Thomas and Company, Ltd., tinplate manufacturers, to the assistant managing director. Mr. Johnson was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1911 and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1914. His death occurred in July 1948.
