Ashby Canal

From Graces Guide

From the Coventry Canal at Marston Junction to Snarestone, 22 miles; a final 8 miles has been closed due to mining subsidence. Originally built as a wide canal to Ashby-de-la-Zouch which it failed to reach. The Ashby Canal was constructed lock-free on a contour of 300 feet.

1794 Legal provisions for building a tramroad were provided within the Act of Parliament granted for the canal construction on 25th May 1794

1846 The Midland Railway obtained an Act of Parliament to acquire the company.
