BERTRAM GODDARD was educated at a private school and served his pupilage under the chief mechanical engineer of the Great Eastern Railway at Stratford, from 1909 to 1913. During the war of 1914-18 he served in France in the Royal Engineers and subsequently received a commission in the railway operating division.
On demobilization in 1919 he returned to the service of the Great Eastern Railway, as draughtsman, but two years later went to India on his appointment to the Bengal Nagpur Railway as assistant locomotive superintendent. Later he was promoted to be district locomotive superintendent, and from 1935 to 1938 was works manager of the locomotive shops. Finally he was appointed superintendent of the mechanical workshops at Khargpur, with responsibility for a personnel of 10,000, but relinquished this position on account of ill-health and returning to England, received an appointment in 1942 as superintendent of the Royal Ordnance Factory at Durham, where he was in control of personnel of 7,000. He resigned this post, however, in the following year.
Mr. Goddard was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1944, only twelve months before his death, which occurred on 13th January 1945, in his fifty-first year.
