From Graces Guide

1878 August 5th. Bicycle Touring Club founded by S. J. A. Cotterell‎, S. H. Ineson‎ and T. Hiram Holding‎. Vice-presidents included Meldon of Dublin, George Lacy Hillier and J. W. Beningfield

1878. 16th February. The Bicycle Union formed. Meeting held at the Guildhall Tavern with G. F. Cobb (Cambridge University) in the chair.[1]

1878. J. W. Beningfield is treasurer.[2]

1879. 12 June. Championship Mile Race at Stamford Bridge where H. L. Cortis (Wanderers Bicycle Club) beat F. T. East (Surrey Bicycle Club).[3]

1879. 19th June. Five Miles Amateur Championship where H. L. Cortis (Wanderers Bicycle Club) beat F. T. East (Surrey Bicycle Club); W. L. Ainslie (Dark Blue Bicycle Club) was third; W. Wyndham (London Bicycle Club) was fourth.[4]

1879. 13th October. Amateur vs. Professional Cycle race at the Mollineux Grounds, Wolverhampton where H. L. Cortis (Amateur) beat John Keen over 20 miles.[5]

1879. 18th October. Amateur vs. Professional Cycle race at Stamford Bridge where John Keen beat H. L. Cortis (Amateur) over one mile and five miles. Keen therefore wins the three match contest.[6]

1880. One and five mile championships at Stamford Bridge.[7]

1883. Became the National Cyclists' Union
