C. J. Hartley (c1881- )

1939 M.I.Mech.E. Director, Hartley's (Stoke-on-Trent) Ltd., Kearsley Chambers, Stoke-on-Trent. Age: 58. Career: Apprent., Kerr, Stuart and Co, Loco. Engrs., and Mr. George A. Mitcheson, Stoke-on-Trent; responsible for many patents, mainly relating to Sewage purification, in which he specialises; during 30 years has effected many innovations and improvements in methods of and machinery for treatment in purification of Sewage; closely associated with the L.C.C. purification plant for treating the London Sewage at Beckton, and also the West Middlesex plant at Mogden for both of which schemes he designed and installed extensive sewage machinery; each plant is the largest of its kind in England; 1920, designed a large installation of Sewage Distributors for Tokyo which were manufactured in Japan; 1924, patented and designed a rectangular rope hauled distributor operated by fixed water wheels driven by the sewage of which large installations have been adopted by the Cities of Leeds and Bradford.
