Carlsberg
The Carlsberg Group is a large brewing company founded in 1847, and has become the 5th largest brewery group in the world, employing around 33,000 people.
1847 The Carlsberg Brewery was established in Valby, just outside Copenhagen in Denmark, by J. C. Jacobsen, the first brew being finished on 10 November.
1868 Exportation of Carlsberg Beer began.
1875 Jacobsen set up the Carlsberg Laboratory, which worked on the scientific problems relating to brewing. It featured a Department of Chemistry and a Department of Physiology. The species of yeast used to make pale lager, Saccharomyces carlsbergensis, was isolated at the Laboratory and was named after it. The concept of pH was developed there as well as advances in protein chemistry.
1882 Jacobsens son Carl set up his own brewery, naming it the Ny (New) Carlsberg Brewery, the original becoming known as the Gamle (Old) Carlsberg Brewery.
1887 J. C. Jacobsen died and the Carlsberg Foundation took control of the old brewery.
1906 Both the breweries were merged to become Carlsberg Breweries.
1968 Foreign brewing of the beer began with the opening of a Carlsberg brewery in Blantyre, Malawi.
1970 Carlsberg acquired Tuborg breweries, and formed United Breweries, known now as Carlsberg AS.
1972 Carlsberg Laboratory renamed the Carlsberg Research Centre, and was transferred to the brewery.
1992 Carlsberg UK merged with Allied Breweries, to form Carlsberg-Tetley PLC a 50/50 JV.
1994 Production started at the one Carlsberg brewery in Ashkelon, Israel of Carlsberg and Tuborg for the local Israeli market.
1996 To strengthen their position on the British beer market, Carlsberg and Bass agreed to combine Carlsberg-Tetley and Bass Breweries but the merger was not ratified by the British Government
1997 Carlsberg AS took over ownership of the Carlsberg UK firm including 100% of Carlsberg-Tetley PLC, which was renamed Carlsberg UK in 2004.
1998 Carlsberg's Shanghai brewery started production.
