1926 Sanitas Trust Ltd was incorporated[1] to acquire Sanitas Co and W. Woodward[2]
1960 Charles Sweeny and some associates acquired a controlling interest in the trust[3]. Had 6 wholly-owned subsidiaries. Operating companies were Sanitas, W. Woodward, maker of gripe water, Elsan Manufacturing Co, Liqufruta Laboratories, Oppenheimer, Son and Co, Lactagol[4]
1960 London Merchant Securities acquired 41 percent of the shares in Sanitas Trust[5]
1961 The company was a manufacturer of patent medicines, soaps, disinfectants, etc[6]
1961 Acquired Rimmel, Tuxan Holdings, Spa Brushes and Superma Ltd[7]
1962 Acquired H. Tramer, of Speke, Liverpool.[8]
1963 New Rimmel and Tuxan products were introduced and a new line of Woodward nursery products. Owned Horton Manufacturing Co, whose operations were transferred to the Limehouse works[9]
1964 Owned H. Tramer, maker of paper containers[10]. Wright, Layman and Umney was acquired[11]
1966 London Merchant Securities held 44 percent of the shares in Sanitas Trust [12]
By 1967 Carlton Investments owned 33 percent of Bristol Plant Hire[13]
1968 London Merchant had increased its holding in the Trust buying shares from the Caplin family[14]. By the end of the FY, the Trust had become a subsidiary of London Merchant Securities[15]
1969 London Merchant transferred Haddon Group and Westerham Press to Sanitas Trust[16]
1969 Sanitas Trust changed its name to Carlton Industries; the group has interests in batteries (Tungstone Products), beauty preparations, brushes, engineering products, pharmaceutical products, plastic mouldings, print and packaging material, sanitation and cleaning, soap[17]
1970 Sold most of the pharmaceutical and toiletry interests to LRC International except for the 71 percent interest in Rimmel[18]
1970 Also owned Gardiner, Sons and Co, Haddon Group, Westerham Press[19]
1970 Subsidiary Carlton Homes acquired Comben and Wakeling, private house developers[20]
By 1970 Bristol Plant Hire was a subsidiary of Carlton Investments, part of London Merchant Securities[21]
1971 Acquired Oldham International, battery makers, after a contested take-over battle[22]
1972 The stake in Rimmel was sold[23]
1977 Acquired the remainder of Bristol Plant Hire[24]
1981 A majority interest in the company was acquired by Hawker Siddeley
1984 Hawker Siddeley acquired the remainder of the shares in the company[25]; its particular interests were in the the car battery parts of the group; it also acquired a majority interest in Invergordon Distillers[26]
1987 Oldham Batteries Ltd was renamed Oldham Crompton Batteries Ltd
1989 Renamed Hawker Batteries Ltd[27]
