Charles Cowan (1801-1899)

1801 Born son of Alexander Cowan (d. 1859), owner of paper mills at Penicuik, near Edinburgh

1820s After travels in Europe, entered the family business

1847 Elected as MP

c.1851 Patented a paper pulp-meter, by Charles Cowan of Valley-field, near Edinburgh

1859 Left Parliament. Concerned himself with his paper-manufacturing business. Became head of the business on his father's death.

By 1862 the business had become Alexander Cowan and Sons

1889 He died at his home, Wester Lea, Murrayfield, Edinburgh, on 29 March 1889.
