"CHARLES HENRY WHITE studied engineering at the Bedfordshire County Council's Technical Institute and served his apprenticeship with Messrs. T. Balmforth and Company, Ltd., engineers, of Luton, from 1906 to 1911, in whose employment he continued as a section leader in the drawing office for a further four years.
He then joined the staff of the Ministry of Munitions and was engaged upon the design of tanks with control of the experimental section. Following a year's experience as inspecting engineer with the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, Ltd., he returned in 1919 to Messrs. Balmforth and Company to take charge of the drawing office, and was made works manager three years later. After occupying the position of superintending engineer from 1925 to 1936 he severed his connection with the firm and became chief engineer and manager at the chemical works of Messrs. Alcock, Ltd.
In 1938 he was attached to the War Office as a civil engineering assistant and served in the directorate of fortifications for two years. In this capacity he was responsible for the design of a variety of plants, including central heating, mobile units for the British Expeditionary Force, and laundry equipment. His final position was that of test engineer to the Clarkson Thimble Tube Boiler Company, Ltd., at Luton. Mr. White, whose death in his fifty-eighth year occurred on 10th December 1948, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1940."
