1864 Clayton, Son and Co was established in Hunslet by Leonard Clayton and his son Lawrence Clayton.

1890 Description and drawings of a three-lift gasholder. An addition was made to the gasholder capacity at Dawsholm Works by adding a third lift to one of the existing gasholders. The work was executed by Clayton, Son, and Co of Hunslet. The total height was slightly over 125 ft., including the depth of the tank, which was 30 ft. under the ground level. The depth of each of the lifts was about 30 ft. The diameter of the tank was 103 ft., while the diameters of the outer, middle, and inner lifts of the gasholder were respectively 160 ft., 157 ft. 8 1/4 in., and 154 ft. 6 3/4 in. The original framing consisted of sixteen cast-iron columns 65 ft. high, 3ft. in diameter at bottom, tapering to 2ft. 6in. at top, tied together at top by lattice girders, and having guide runs bolted by distance brackets to the inner side of columns. These columns had to be heightened to the extent of 30 ft. W. Foulis was the engineer.[1]
