1895 Charles William Bate Crossley started in business in Johnstone with Charles H. Clifton, as Clifton and Crossley, manufacturing drilling machines.

1896 Description and engraving of a 4ft radial arm drilling machine[1]

1897 The name of the firm was changed to Crossley and Co[2]
