"CYRIL ARMITAGE NEEDHAM was associated with water supply engineering during almost the whole of his professional career, and before his premature retirement on account of ill health in 1940 had risen to the position of deputy water engineer to the Corporation of Birkenhead, in whose service he had been for forty years.
He was born in 1882 and educated at technical schools in Liverpool, Wallasey, and Birkenhead. His practical training was obtained at the central generating station in Birkenhead, on the conclusion of which he continued on the staff for a brief period as an assistant. He entered upon his long period of service in the water supply department of the Birkenhead Corporation in 1900 and successively held the positions of junior draughtsman, general engineering assistant, and principal assistant to the water engineer.
In 1913 he was appointed assistant water engineer and after holding this position for ten years he was promoted to be deputy water engineer. During his tenure of this office he was responsible for the construction of two pumping stations and the installation of five sets of electrically operated turbo-pumps. Mr. Needham was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1905 and transferred to Associate Membership in 1909 and to Membership in 1930.
He was also a past-president of the Liverpool Engineering Society. His death occurred on 7th January 1951."
