Dark Mill, Brimscombe

Dark Mill was first recorded in 1597 when the property comprised a house, two fulling mills and two grist mills.

By 1671, a gig mill had been added to the complex

1784 The property consisted of a fulling mill, a shear-grinder's mill and a dye house.

1847 For sale. Dark Mill, Bourne, near Stroud. Used as a clothing mill.[1]

1860 The property stopped being used as a cloth mill

1861 To let. Dark Mill, Bourne, Stroud. Occupied by John Webb, Clothier.[2]

1863 To Let. Dark Mill, Brimscombe. Clothing or Shoddy mill.[3]

1869 Reeves and Co

The mill was used for a variety of other purposes later in the 19th century: as a gun-felt manufactory in 1870; a dye works in 1876; a saw mill in 1881 and for the manufacture of umbrella sticks in 1885.

1874 Holroyd and Wade in liquidation

1872 Mill for sale.[4]

1880 Mill for sale.[5]

1903 the site was acquired by Critchley Bros. Ltd. of Wimberley Mills nearby, who used it for the manufacture of wooden knitting needles and crochet hooks, and who continued to occupy the site until the mid 1990s.

1948 Dawsons Manufacturing Co, Dark Mill, Brimscombe.[6]

1949 Golden Valley Chemical Works.[7]

New factory buildings were constructed on the site in the 1950s and 1960s

1964 The early 19th century stone mill building was demolished.

1998 G. B. Electronics Ltd, Dark Mills, Brimscombe, Stroud.[8]
