The steam powered car was largely based on the work of Leon Serpollet in France and that of White and Stanley Brothers in the first decade of the twentieth century. This was followed by that of the Doble Brothers and their associates from 1910.
Abner Doble, William Doble, John Doble, and Warren Doble commenced their work at the time the White Brothers stopped. By perfecting the electrically operated and controlled burner, and electrical control of feed water, they made possible the compact and entirely automatic power unit, capable of competing in many fields with the internal-combustion engine.
