"DUNCAN CARMICHAEL, whose untimely death occurred on 9th October 1948 at the early age of thirty-seven, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1944. He was educated at the Royal Technical College, Glasgow, and served his apprenticeship with Messrs. Barclay Curle and Company, Ltd., marine engineers, of Glasgow, from 1927 to 1932.
The remainder of his brief career was spent as a draughtsman with various firms, including Messrs. Harland and Wolff, Ltd., of Belfast, and Messrs. David Rowan and Company, Ltd., marine engineers, of Glasgow, except for a brief period when he was in the employment of the Turbine Research and Development Association. From 1945 to 1947 he was on the drawing office staff of the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, Ltd., of Glasgow. In April 1947, a month before his final long illness, he was appointed assistant lecturer in engineering at Coatbridge Technical College, but was unable to lecture for more than four weeks. Whilst a Student Member of the Institute of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland, Mr. Carmichael gained awards for papers on "Marine Oil Engines" and on Works Maintenance and Production. Later he contributed articles to the technical press on "Lubrication of Marine Gears"."
