E. Norton, CBE, BEM, Fellow, was educated at Portsmouth Technical College and the Royal Dockyard School, Portsmouth. He held various appointments in the Admiralty at Whitehall and Bath between 1933 and 1946 and served as an Engineer Assistant to the Engineer-in-Chief of the Fleet 1946 to 1950.

Mr Norton joined Yarrow and Co Ltd as Chief Design Engineer in the Yarrow Admiralty Research Department and served in this capacity from 1950 to 1956. He was appointed a Director of Yarrow and Co in 1956 and has been Managing Director since 1962. He is also Deputy Chairman and Managing Director Yarrow (Shipbuilders) Ltd.

He has served as a Member of Council and as a Member of the Technical Committee Lloyd's Register of Shipping. He is an Honorary Member of the City and Guilds of London Institute.
