1828 Broke his thigh in a boiler explosion on the Locomotion where John Gillespie was killed, but Edward recovered

1841 Living at Bank Top, Darlington (age 30), an Engineer. Living with his wife Isabella and children Edwin, Emma, John and Mary. Also in the house is Martha Appleton (age 15). [1]

1851 Living at 6 West Terrace, Bermondsey (age 41 and born at Sadberge, Durham), a Railway Foreman. Living with his wife Isabella (age 39) and children Emma (age 17), Edwin (age 16), John (age 14), Mary (age 10), William (age 8), Robert (age 6), Appleton (age 5) and Isabella (age 1). [2]

1871 Living at 64 Upper Grange Road, Bermondsey (age 62 and born at Sadberge, Durham), a Railway Locomotive Superintendent. Living with his son Robert (age 27 and born at Darlington), a Railway Locomotive Foreman and his daughters Mary (age 30) and Isabella (age 20). [4]
1881 Living at 2 Clifton Terrace, Camberwell (age 72 and born at Sadberg, York.) , an Engineer Loco Retired. Living with daughters Mary and Isabella A. and grandson Edward N. (age 9 and born in Greece). [5]
1891 Living at 34 Clifton Road, Peckham (age 82 and born at Sudbury, Durham), a Retired Engineer and a Widower. Living with daughters Mary and Isabella and grandson Edward (age 19) a Locomotive Fitter. [6]
