EDWARD MAY MUNRO was for many years managing director of Messrs. Brecknell, Munro and Rogers of Bristol, with whom he entered into partnership in 1896. In the early days of tramways, he gave much attention to overhead equipment, and among his inventions were the compensated lever attachment to the trolley standard and the swivel trolley head. Mr. Munro paid several visits to Russia and personally supervised the installation of this system on the St. Petersburg tramways.
In 1909 his firm established a London office, of which he was in charge until his retirement in 1913, when he took up consulting work. He was a pioneer in trackless tram design and construction.
Mr. Munro was born in Bristol and received his technical education at the Merchant Venturers' Technical College and the University College.
From 1876 to 1883 he served his apprenticeship with the Albert Dock Company, Bristol, and also at the Broad Weir Engine Works, where he remained for three years as draughtsman.
He was later employed as chief assistant to the late Mr. John Watts, M.I.Mech.E., and was engaged upon the design of mill plant.
In 1893 he became chief draughtsman to Mr. Hans Renold, M.I.Mech.E., and from 1894 to 1896 was works manager to Messrs. Hunt and Mitton of Birmingham.
Mr. Munro had been a Member of the Institution since 1897.
His death occurred on 3rd February 1933, in his seventy-first year.
