EDWARD MEREDITH GRIFFITHS was the founder of Messrs. C. W. Burton, Griffiths and Company, manufacturers of machine tools. He was a native of Warwickshire, and was educated at King Edward's Grammar School, Birmingham.
From 1876 to 1881 he served an apprenticeship with the Patent Nut and Bolt Company, Birmingham, with whom he remained until 1883.
He subsequently entered the drawing office of Messrs. A. Burton et Fils, engineers, Paris, an English house established there in 1855, and was engaged on designs for pumps and elevating and conveying machinery. He became manager in 1886, and returned to England five years later to found the business associated with his name. He was responsible for the introduction of many special types of machine tools from the United States.
In 1917 the business was formed into a limited liability company with Mr. Griffiths as chairman.
The company was taken over in 1919 by the Birmingham Small Arms Company, of which Mr. Griffiths was also a director until 1922.
During the War, he rendered valuable assistance to the Ministry of Munitions by his services on the Machine Tool Advisory Committee. He was a founder of the Machine Tool Trades Association and was a vice-president for several years.
Mr. Griffiths had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1904.
His death occurred on 20th August 1933, in his seventy-third year.
