Engineering and Arc Lamps Ltd, of Sphere Works, St. Albans, Herts. Electrical and Mechanical Engineers

Established 1897.

1911 Gilbert Arc Lamp Co acquired Arc Lamps Ltd of St. Albans; name changed to Engineering and Arc Lamps Ltd; business moved to St. Albans. Incorporated as a Limited Co.

Post-WWI. With the demise of the arc lamp, the business evolved into making electrical fittings for gas-filled lamps; the engineering side of the business expanded considerably.

1920 Formation of Engineering and Lighting Equipment Co by George Joseph Wells and William Bird specifically to acquire the Engineering and Arc Lamps company. Considerable expansion of the business followed.

1922 Directors: J. S. Hecht, Charles Oliver and W. M. D. Pell. Makers of "Quickprint" photo-printing and photographic arc lamps and flame arc lamps.
