1890 Company formed.

It became one of the principal suppliers of arc lamps in Britain, including lighting the Thames Embankment.

1911 Acquired Arc Lamps Ltd of St. Albans; name changed to Engineering and Arc Lamps Ltd; business moved to St. Albans.

Post-WWI. With the demise of the arc lamp, the business evolved into making electrical fittings for gas-filled lamps; the engineering side of the business expanded considerably.

1920 Formation of Engineering and Lighting Equipment Co by George Joseph Wells and William Bird specifically to acquire the Engineering and Arc Lamps company. Considerable expansion of the business followed.

1939 The Engineering and Lighting Equipment Co Ltd was incorporated as a public company to acquire the business; shares in the company were made available to the public.
