The Right Honourable Baron SIMON OF WYTHENSHAWE, M.A., who was born in Didsbury, Manchester, on 9 October, 1879, died on 3 October, 1960.
Ernest Darwin Simon was the son of Henry Simon, M.I.C.E., founder of the firm of Henry Simon Ltd, Flour Mill Engineers, of Manchester. He was educated at Rugby and at Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he studied engineering for 3 years, graduating (B.A., Mechanical Sciences Tripos) in 1901.
From 1901-03 he was a pupil with Simon, Buhler, and Baumann, of Frankfurt, in their engineering and machine works, and with Gebruder Buhler, Switzerland. In 1903 he returned to England to become a milling engineer with Henry Simon Ltd, and for the following 2 years worked on the design and construction of flour mills and silo granaries, notably those in Victoria Docks, London, and in Carlisle. During this period he became a Director of the Eagle Ironworks, Stalybridge. He was appointed a Director of Henry Simon Ltd in 1906, Managing Director in 1908, becoming Chairman in 1910, and Governing Director in 1915.
