ERNEST WATERHOUSE CAMPBELL, whose death took place in November 1941, was managing director of Messrs. Campbells and Hunter, engineers, of Hunslet, Leeds, from 1918 till 1939. He was associated with the firm throughout the whole of his career, and was responsible for the design and manufacture of heavy machine tools for marine and locomotive construction.
Born in 1876, he served his apprenticeship from 1890 to 1895 with Messrs. Campbells and Hunter, passing thence into the turning shop of the same works. In 1898 he was placed in charge of the drawing office and later became secretary of the firm. From 1901 to 1918 he successively filled the posts of draughtsman, works manager, and director.
Mr. Campbell was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1901 and was transferred to Membership in 1922.
