ERNEST WILLIAM COTTER was in the service of Messrs. J. Stone and Company, Ltd., marine engineers, of Deptford for thirty-eight years. He was born in 1882 and served his apprenticeship with Messrs. Thomas Noakes and Sons, Ltd., in London, from 1896 to 1903, meanwhile attending classes in engineering at the City of London College.
After three years' experience in the drawing office of the Cassel Hydraulic Engineering Company, he entered upon his association with Messrs. Stone and for thirteen years occupied the position of draughtsman. On the termination of a brief appointment as technical manager and production engineer in the aeroplane department of Messrs. Richard Garrett and Sons, Ltd., of Leiston, Suffolk, he returned in 1919 to Messrs. Stone and Company as chief draughtsman with responsibility for the administration of the technical department, and from 1935 until the time of his death which occurred on 17th May 1944, was technical representative and departmental manager of the side of the business dealing with ships' auxiliary fittings, for the design and production of which he had entire responsibility.
Mr. Cotter was elected a Member of the Institution in 1922. He was also a Fellow of theRoyal Society of Arts.
