FRANK FAIRLEY was educated at Harrow School and received his practical training with Drake and Gorham from 1890 to 1893. He then joined the British Thomson-Houston Co. for 2 years and was engaged on electric traction and general engineering work. In 1896 he obtained an appointment with Sir W. G. Armstrong Whitworth and Co., in connection with the electrical equipment of warships. Two years later he became junior partner with Mr. W. C. C. Hawtayne, consulting engineer. He left Mr. Hawtayne in 1904 to become Substation and Mains Engineer with the Metropolitan Electric Tramways Co. In 1906 he went to Hankow as Electrical Engineer for Poole, Lauder and Co., and in 1907 was appointed Consulting Engineer to the Hankow Light and Power Co. and the Hankow Waterworks and Electric Light Co. Ten years later he went to Australia and became Distribution Engineer in the Melbourne Electricity Department under Mr. H. R. Harper, the Chief Electrical Engineer, and retained the position until 1921. In 1924 he entered the service of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board as Assistant Distribution Engineer, and remained with the company until his retirement in 1935. He died at the age of 68. He joined The Institution in 1898 as an Associate, and became an Associate Member in 1899 and a Member in 1908.
