Frank Mihill Johnson (1880-1929) of Cafferata and Co and Blagg and Johnson

1880 April 18th. Born at Steyning, Sussex, the son of John Henry Johnson (c1847-1883), a Landscape painter, and the second marriage of Eugene Beatrix Lecomte (born 1856 at Marylebone and died 1933) who later married (thirdly) William Crockford, a Brewer.

1881 Living at 26 Lansdowne Road, Lambeth: Frank M. Johnson (age 11 months born Bramber, Sussex). With his parents John H. Johnson and Eugenie B. Johnson.[1]

1891 Living at 2 St. Peter's Road, Mile End Old Town, London: Frank M. Johnson (age 10 born Bramber, Sussex). With his step-father William Crockford and his mother Eugenie Crockford and William's four children from a previous marriage.[2]

1900 Listed as Frank Mihill Johnson, Patent Broker of Shann and Johnson.[3]

1910 March. Announced that F. Mihill Johnson will act as general manager of the (Mack Fibrous Slab) business is Australia.[4]

1910 September. The address of F. Mihill Johnson is 553 Collins Street, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, and he is involved with Mack Ltd and named in their prospectus.[5] His father had been born in Australia so there may be family connections.

1910 December. 'Mr F. M. Johnson (general manager Mack, Ltd) is now establishing business in Sydney, and is supervising the completion of the factory at Alexandria.'[6]

1910 December. His wife (unnamed) of Albany Street, Regent's Park seeks to find her husband. He left her in England two years ago to go to Melbourne to start a company and she has had no communication since.[7] This notice is repeated in Australian newspapers in January 1911.[8]

1914 Sailed from Dover to New York and heading for Montreal.

1914 When crossing from Canada to the USA he states he is last resident in Melbourne. He states he is an engineer and that his next-of-kin is Eugenie Crockford.

1915 Sailed from New York to Liverpool. Resident in Canada.[9]

1916/18 Living at Montreal, Canada, where he states his mother and next of kin is Eugene Crockford of 39 The Park, Mitcham. He is an engineer and married but separated.[10]

1919 Patent application. Frank Mihill Johnson and Cafferata and Co for a Machine for the manufacture of building slabs.[11]

1921 Patent application. F. M. Johnson and Cafferata and Co. Plaster Slab Moulding Machine.[12]

1921 Patent application. F. M. Johnson, machines for moulding building-bricks.[13]

1921 August. Founding director of Blagg and Johnson. His address is given as F. M. Johnson, The Cottage, Beacon Hill, Newark. This address in 1925 is occupied by R. B. Cafferata[14]

It is rumoured that FMJ invented the Jupiter Angle Bead and was only involved in the business of Blagg and Johnson for the first six months before moving to the USA. One source says he ran off with the company's money but no evidence for this found.

1926 Francis(sic) Mihill Johnson, 5 Foxmore street, Battersea.[15]

1929 Electoral role shows Frank Mihill Johnson (abode 54 King's Road, Kingston-on-Thames) and Edith Johnson (abode 203 Hampstead Road, N.1.) with entitlement through 86 Gray's Inn Road[16]

1929 October 03rd. Died at Westminster Hospital Board Sanctuary. Of 12 The Park, Mitcham. Probate to Eugenia Beatrice Crockford, Widow. Valued at £96.
